Invictus
BY WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

"bludgeonings of chance" is one of my favorite lines in this poem, because it uses personification to create a strong image of the powerful feeling that chance(bad luck) can give you.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite line of this poem is "My head is bloody, but unbowed." because shows that the character has courage and will allow no one to "master his fate" and "captain his soul"
ReplyDeleteSummarize the poem in one sentence: You may have a bad life, but you need to be thankful to the gods that gave you the skill to be strong and move on.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sentence in this poem is "out of the night that covers me", the first line because there is a metaphor, "the night" as the bad things, troubles in the poet's life. Also, this sentence kind of summarizes the poem.
ReplyDeleteWhatever happens to me doesn't matter, no one can control me, I am in charge of my fate.
