Argos

Hello everyone, our group is here to present the anicient city state of Greek, Argos


Slide 2 (Michael)

Argo is a city-state in Greek, located on the eastern side of Peloponissos which is also located on a plain.


Slide 3 (Catherine)

The city of Argos was believed to be the birthplace of Perseus, the son of the Zeus and Danae who was the daughter of Argos. The city Argos gained it's name from the name Argos, son of Zeus and Niobe.


Slide 4 (Matthew)

Argo's flag has green, red and white stripes. The green stripes represent agriculture, fertility, and the harvest. Red stripes represent valor, honor, and courage. White stripe vertically in the middle means peace and purity.

Argos was one of the earlest cities in Greek to issue coins. each time people talked about Argos, they thought of coinage in Argos. Many scholars credit Argos with the invention of coinage in ancient Greece, an invention that made trade much easier. Argives also established standard measurements for weights and capacity of dry and liquid materials.

Argos was considered one of the most powerful city-states, although it never achieved the cultural greatness of Athens and the military greatness of Sparta, but Argos was actively involved in arts, their magnificent stone sculptures of athletes. Argos was famous for their wonderful musicians and poets.

The statues of Polykleitus were prized almost beyond price. He sculpted in bronze and marble and chose athletes as his. He sculpted in bronze and marble and chose athletes as his subject.

Drama also plays a really important role in the Argives. they have a lot of festivals for honoring Dionysus, the god of drama. plays were performed in open-air theaters, about 20,000 eager Argives wants to watch the show each time. They have effected all the Greek's city-states for their excellence in art.People can still see performance of drama today in Greek, making a strong steady base for drama acting to the future.

The ancient city state of Argos had a nearby harbor for trade and commerce.  The weather was hot and dry in the summer, and cold and wet in the winter. The soil was not especially fertile. the people of Argos has to fight to grow food. This they did, quite successfully and the Agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy.

Argos's patron god is who they prayed to, is Hera, godess of women and marriage. they have a lot of festivals to pray to Hera. They often sacrifices animals to give to Hera.

The true historical hero Argos was Pheidon, a man who began his rule in 680 BCE. Under his guidance, Argos grew into one of the Greece's most powerful city-states. He established standard measurements for weights and capacity of dry and liquid materials.

All over Greece, Lasus was a known name, he is a poet from Argos. he often wrote chants called dithyrambs, there wild chants had irregular form and were sung as part of festivals honoring Dionysus, the god of drama.

Like all Greek city-states, they had their own government system. Their government was a monarchy - Argos was ruled by a king. Sparta and Argos always fought with each other, they have been enemy for decades. And for a long time Argos was the slaves for Sparta.

"We are the strong, the proud, the argives was a famous motto for Argos. However, Argos is also the representative of loyalty.
